early 60's paint colours

Looking for the right paint for a burgundy commer ... has anyone tried repairing and matching original paint on early commers ?
 
If your really lucky the paint code may be on the chassis plate. The problem with old commercial vehicles is that they were sold in primer and painted to order by the supplying dealer or in the case of camper vans by the converter, Dormobiles used to be the best for matching paint because they had there own standard colours other converters were not so well organised. The good news with the Maidstone conversion is that it was factory built by Rootes at the Maidstone factory, hence the name, so there is a good chance its in a standard Rootes colour. Most proper paint factors will still have the correct colour cards or "chips" and will be able to match the paint exactly as it left the factory, you need to either drive the van to the local paint factors or take a panel with you if there is no paint code on the vans chassis plate so the paint can be matched. One other small problem is that your paintwork is now 50 odd years old and will have faded somewhat but a good factor will be able to "factor" that into the mix! :)

The most probable colour for burgundy that I can find on my swatches is Rootes code 26 - Carnation Red. Of the four reds I have swatches for, that is the most maroony.:)

If you ring around the local paint factors you should find one with a spectra-analyser or a "brick" which they use to measure the pigment strength and content in the paint and then checks the results against a data base to get a match.
I had my HA van "read" and got a 99.7% to a Merc commercial colour So close that you can paint edge to edge.
Its best to cut the paint first with a good compound polish to get a true reading.
