Distributor swap

As he’s running badly with the very odd backfire I am hoping and assuming it’s points time again. So going to get a electronic distributor and keep the points one as a backup. I know its a 25D. I have been told about engine being TDC and it being on spark 1 (and not 4) before removing distributor (keeping leads connected). Then plonk the new one in exactly like origional etc. o_O What I am hoping is that someone has a pic or photo of what the TDC marks etc look like on the 1725 engine please. And obviously any pointers or advice is always appreciated

Unfortunately you will find that fitting an electronic dizzy is bound to upset the timing:( But it's easy to put right

Here are the timing marks

I don't usually bother with them as worn parts and different fuel make them pretty redundant, just use them as a starting point to get it running then fine tune until you hit the sweet spot.

But before you go swapping the dizzy make sure there isn't a loose connection somewhere causing the back fires, the connections on the coil are likely suspects. Also a good idea to mount the coil on the inner wing where it's a bit cooler instead of being bolted to the engine

Cool thanks. When it gets to that stage I will ask neighbour to assist with tweeking. Getting points as well so will need to fit that to make sure it was a points problem then I can upgrade

True. Seem to remember the wires bit iffy. I think it is on the wing but I will have a look after work as also double checking bits before they ship them out tomorrow as they asked a couple of questions I wasn’t sure of

Also check the connections on the coil, sometimes they are riveted to it and can work loose.

Cool. Will do. Thanks. Getting new ht leads as well. Noticed the king lead connector for coil is a bit iffy in the rubber socket bit

What's the brown wire cable tied to the king lead? I would move that as it could possible arc through it at the slightest sign of damp

While I was messing about with my last bit of wiring I ran a wire through to pick up an alternator live to cab fuse board. Looking at it yesterday I’ve realised I messed up as I can’t splice off coil ignition live?? At the moment it’s not connected either end. But if it could arc I shall move it off king lead. It was just there to stop it falling

Another school day. Taught how to set points. Thought feeler gauger was a set of precision flat head screwdrivers. I know you will all roll your eyes but heyho lol

Your garage may not have changed it, if it was still good, as I've read there's some poor quality new ones out there:(

Yes they did say that they aren’t made like they used to. Took him out for a little test drive and he runs fine now so glad that was the fault:)

I have been through a few condensers. I buy them 2 or 3 at a time, just in case. With the replacements it seems to be when it goes , not if it goes.

Ah that’s worth knowing, thanks. Will swap over to electronic dizzy after my camping soiree this weekend
