Diff - icult problem

I need to change the front oil seal in the diff but as the van is off the ground on stands i have no way to 'lock' the axle so i can undo the pinion nut. Any suggestions?

use lever bars across two wheel studs to the ground, leave the wheel nuts on slightly to help stop the lever bars from jumping off, failing that jacks or axle stands under wheel studs may also work, again leave the nuts on so you dont damage threads. good luck;)

Dont try and lead me astray....i know the way myself!!

Hi Charlie, Yes that is exactly what i tried but it just lifted the back of the van of the ground! I may end up having to pull the diff out to get it undone i think:([B)]at least that way i can jam something inside it to lock it up. Cheers

I've not done it on a commer, but I've done it a couple of times on the minor. I tried it under the car but just could't get the leverage so whipped the diff out and got the big nut undone really easiily in the vice with a scaffolding pole.

Another way to do this ,not recommended but as last resort get a large pipe wrench, the type that tightens up on its self, on the flange (may mark this ) scafold tube or braker bar on socket and apply force ! seen this on roadside repair on a truck once, good luck !
