D and J type overdrive

The std Commer gearbox output shaft is too long for an overdrive to be fitted. You will need to swap it for a short output shaft, or get an overdrive gearbox. I managed to get a gearbox from Sunbeam Talbot spares in Barnsley. https://sunbeam-talbot-spares.co.uk/

This box was mated with a D Type overdrive originally from a sunbeam alpine. I had this serviced and the overdrive output shaft changed to a fine spline one (to match my prop shaft) at Overdrive Repair services in Sheffield. https://www.overdrive-repairs.co.uk/

Last thing was the prop shaft needs shortening and you will also need a longer Speedo drive.

Good luck!

Good luck!

Are you fitting an overdrive gearbox to you van? if so then as JJ Autosleeper posted the prop shaft needs to be shortened to take account of the longer overdrive gearbox.

We have J types but have a spare D thought of fitting on another one we had idea shaft might not have to be changed for a D but !!

The splines on the older (D type) output shaft might be different (coarser spines) so you might need to source a prop to suit.
