first things first and cheapest, dive under the van with you grease gun and go through all the linkages theres nipples everywhere[}:)]:D then if not easier then im afraid its probably a worn box but strange for second to wear, if funds are tight then over rev slighly in first and then grap for third!!!!
 
may also be worth undoing the ball joints on the gear linkage and checking they've got full movement and not stiff,i tend to find the same prob on leyland 55's and it nearly always the ball joints seizing up not allowing full movement across the gate especially if the vehicle has been stood for some time:D
