ever since ive owned the old blue commer pickup its had a tendency to lurch and bang under the rear when moving off from a standing start so as ive been underneath the commer pickup today curing its incontinence by changing the diff seal and the rear gearbox seal ive done some investigating, the gearbox seal was a prity easy job just whip out the circlip drill a small hole screw in a screw any yank the old seal out then tap in the new one and replace circlip job done.
the diff seal however wasnt so easy, tooke the prop off all going well, time to remove the centre nut that holds the diff shaft inplace it fell off in my hand as it had been seriously cross threaded allowing the prop to not run true and bang the hell out of the seal which was well and truly knackerd and very very stuck. alot of huffing swearing and a broken screwdriver later it came out in pieces. new one went in ok but ive had to replace the entire prop collar and the centre nut which luckily i had still on a spare axle. also said nut is 34mm and as luck would have it my toolbox ran out of sockets at 32mm. after a quick trip to 2 different halfords and with said socket aquired its now all back together with oil levels nicley topped up not banging and hopefully not leaking. So if your commers lurching and leaking check your centre nut because if its not tight it makes a quickjob a major one.
