Brake balance

One of the advisories from our recent MOT (yep, I'm still in shock we passed first time ) mentioned that the front brake balance was near to the maximum tolerance.

As a newby to any serious vehicle maintenance, this suggests to me adjustment, replacement shoes or possibly hydraulic issues. The former two I'm happy to have a stab at - Sally actually did a maintenance course when she was a student, so she can help out too

If there's any possibility of the latter, I'm inclined to punt it out to our classic friendly village garage rather than get stuck in
and then be without the van as I'm in over my head.

Any suggestions to probably based your others experience appreciated

One thing to look for, is the front wheel cylinders. There are two different bores. If one has been replaced at some time, it may be the wrong size bore.
Otherwise, look for contamination on the shoes and adjustment

had a similar issue with the j4. that turned out to be lazy cylinders full of crud [xx(]

First thing is to whip the wheels off and check for any contamination and pull back cylinder rubber boot and check for any fluid that might be passing the seals. If all's OK and there is plenty of meat on the shoes then adjust and test on a quiet road - you'll soon know if it is pulling to one side:I If you do need to take it to a garage to replace the cylinders I suggest you go armed with some new ones and ask them to fit - I'm sure there is someone on here who can supply them
