Right So, if you have been following my thread you will know Im looking at axles at mo. I have two to chose from.
the normal commer one
or a slightly later one, also from a higher weight van.
I have been advised to use the stronger, heaver rated axle, The problem is it has just over quainter turn of lash in it :-0 Its seen much better days.
I can always use my other axle but this also has a bit of lash as well.
So dose anyone have a good axle? I'm after the beefed up version (same as the yellow one).
ok well on the yellow axle as you turn the input flange (lol flange,
it dose move in as it takes up all the slack. The distance it moves in is quite excessive.
Could this be taken out by shimming it?
Surely the input shaft should be locked up tight, if it has a lot of free play in and out then maybe the bearings are shot[xx(]
Or just needs shimming:I
ok well I will take the input flange off and have a look see about shimming things out, or tho I'm still thinking that over quarter of a turn off free play and about half an inch of movement inn on the input flange will be to much to shim out.
All this damage was done when it had a nasty old ford engine bolted to it. The guy had also made the prop to long, so that was putting a massive load on the diff. I had to lift the engine forward in order to get the prop out.
That doesn,t sound good [xx(]
All you can do is strip it out and see what things are like, it may need new bearings/spacers/shims, then it will be fine
"You,re only supposed to blow the bloody SLIDING doors off"
Now all the bearings I can see and feel with the diff complete like this seem all good. I think the fault is on the input shaft. As i move the input shafts left or right in turn it moves in and out. Now when I look form the back side of the diff and twist it I can see that the inner racer of the bearing is moving in and out, so I'm thinking the bearing my be stuffed! I will split the diff and have a better look.
