What bit is actually the 'float needle ' Tim ? I take it apart and I know what the float is, just not sure what the 'float needle' is:I
the throttle cable is attached to a needle with a spring on it and this appears to be operating properly...there is also another needle on a spring that should operate electically as it has 2 wires attached...

Take the float bowl off, and you will see the float, which pivots on a pin, part of the float pushes on the needle so as the fuel level drops down the float goes with it and allows the needle to come off it,s seat allowing more fuel in. Sometimes a bit of crud or rust gets in the fuel line and stuck on the seat of the needle so it can,t shut off and the carb floods. take it all out and give it a really good clean

Thankyou for your help Tim, I will go and take it apart again tommorrow and let you know how I get on
And would that be enough to make it not start? or do you have any other theories about that?
I have a new spark plug and the old one and both seem to be sparking ok which if I'm right would signify that the condensor and coill are working ok?

took it all aprt again today and following Tim's advice it does not leak petrol everywhere now but it still won't start. I have given up now as its booked for an MOT Wednesday so the scooter shop can sort it out tommorrow. technically we have sold it anyway so any repair will have to be knocked off the price for it...
