Another 1972 vehicle back on the road

I recently undertook a charity cycle ride from Bury St Edmunds to Harwich on my mountain bike and it was hard work. This inspired me to search our my old racing bike and get it back on the road. A new spoke (not easy to find for a 27" wheel), tyres and a good clean and it is fit for the road.

This cost me £34 in 1972. I had saved up half the money myself and my parents paid the other half if I promised to look after it. So far so good, they haven't asked for it back yet!

How refreshing

Go on then, if you've decided to advertise it on here instead of e-bay, I'll take the chance and give you the £34.00 you're asking for it and I'll risk being done.

Now come on Chris you can't just start putting a reserve price on it of £380.00. The buy it now price was there for all to see and that was definitely £34.00 so just get it wrapped up, Christmas paper please and get it sent up here. My great nephew [15]and niece [13] are doing a bike ride from lands End to John O'Groats with a cycling club for Help The Heroes. Now wouldn't they get a shock if their great uncle was to overtake them on an old banger of a bike like yours

I don't know why people do Lands End to John O'Groats, it's uphill all the way in that direction! :D

Having trouble finding Christmas paper at present, will brown paper with christmas trees drawn on it do instead?

You won't have to wait all that much longer before the shops start advertising all the Christmas stuff so there will be Christmas paper in plentiful supply. I want new paper not paper thats been ripped from all your old presents and saved to wrap up next years prezzies.

there's a method in the madness as there is usually a prevailling west south westerly wind at certain times (usually summer time) and it is better to have the wind behind you as much as possible;)

thats a nice old classic Sun bicycle you have there, looks in quite good nick for the year[^][^][8D]

cheers

I've just removed the bottle cage :I It was a bit too rattly without any bottles in it (it is safely stored). I fitted it in 1975 when I was 15 and went for a cycling holiday in the Yorkshire Dales. Practicing for the hills was not easy in Essex, but for those of you who are familiar with the area, I had a circular route from Langdon Hills to Horndon on the Hill and back.

In the Dales I managed to cycle from Arncliffe to Malham without having to push. The trip back was a bit hairy as my brake blocks melted on the way down. I stopped to let them cool, but when I applied them again, the friction against the now rubber coated rim was so great I went straight over the handlebars!

I also discovered that the old Ever Ready bicycle lamp was next to useless in the complete darkness with drystone walls on either side.

Hi Chris,i am very familier with the Langdon Hills as i live not far from one tree hill,in Corringham. I have riden these roads (and hills) for the last 24 years since i started cycling again to regain some fitness.[B)]
I will be planning trips to various parts of the country including the Yorkshire dales with my bike in the Commer when i retire very soon. Some thing i've always wanted to do and now i can do 2 things i love at the same time :D:D:D:D

back to my "rootes"

I'm pleased to say bike lights today are brilliant :p if a tad expensive [V]

Just wondering where you stayed in the dales, Were you youth hostelling or camping. I used to go to Malham quite a lot, spent many a happy hour in the hikers bar at the Buck.

Stayed at Hawkswick Cote near Arncliffe - camping. Same campsite we stayed at in 1968 when a friend sent us a letter addressed to:
Yellow Commer,
Somewhere near Grassington,
Yorkshire.

Postman found us the very next day!
