All in the timing

Hello,
this week I have been mostly fitting electronic ignition...

so I came to do the timing today and discovered that its pretty tricky to see the marks!

you see there seems to be a large yellow fan in the way -which is a bit er owchy...

(no don't call an ambulance - get the camera!)

I came up with a cunning plan to get it sorted (and keep my fingers)

I think I got about 7 degrees advance, but now she's "hunting" quite a bit at idle.

Any ideas?

p.s. I got my little helper to turn the engine over for me when finding TDC

IMHO its better to set it to how it runs best (ignoring the mark) and then make your own mark. Use this mark as a guidance only next time you time-up (and make a new mark if different) as stuff drifts.......

PS I broke my wrist once on a handcrank[:(!] Old De Dion Bouton started religiously on 7th or 8th crank. That time it started on first one, catching me unawares.
Wouldnt want this to happen to your kid, though I guess unless youve got big compression problems she cant turn it over anyway!!!

don't worry that photo was staged (ignition off, handle not engaged)

I did use the handle this morning as the battery was flat and there was a fair old kick!

I used to use the handle on the morris quite regularly without any problems, but the engine is half the size!

thanks for the advice on the timing. I'll probably advance the timing a bit then.

i remember walking across a building site twenty years ago when i was a young apprentice, and as i walked past a cement mixer someone shouted.( look out). so as i turned my head to look back this hard piece of metal wacked me straight on the chin and knocked me out cold and bust my jaw. when i awoke to find an ambulance man standing over me i noticed the metal object on the floor next to me. what some other young lad had done was start the old fashioned cement mixer up using the starting handle and he couldnt pull the handle off quick enought before it started spining round, so he ran away from it. i was the unlucky one who copt it on the chin when it finally flew off .:p;)
