Advice needed on reconditioned / salvaged engines

Hi

This is not commer related. Our Audi A4 has had oil pump failure and the cost of changing the pump and other related components is coming in at over 2k. So it's cheaper to just find a replacement engine and scrap the current one. Plus my wife drove it until it made a noise..

I've started delving into the murky world of reconditioned and salvaged engines this morning, and it all seems a bit dodgy. I've spoken to 3 salvage yards and they all told me the engines they had are low mileage... Whats the best way to approach this? Should I actually go to the yards to inspect the vehicles which are being dismantled?

In an ideal world you would want to hear the engine running but it it's already bee pulled out then that's a bit awkward. You're always going to be taking a gamble buying a second hand engine so try and gather as much info as you can and get one on condition you can take it back if it's knackered. Also, if possible, use a yard that comes recommended by someone you know.
It might even be cheaper to buy another car and strip it yourself, that way you could chose one with a decent motor.

Some of the salvage places offer a 3 month warranty, those engines are a bit more expensive so I guess its worth paying the extra or is a warranty in these circumstances not worth the paper its written on?

If it's written on a piece of paper and you follow the conditions of it then it's a legal document, just make sure you know exactly what the conditions are and they sign it.

Bad times as well, within the space of a week we've gone from having 3 vehicles on the road to just one. I had to get the bus to work this morning. :-(

if its a 1.9 TDI. I have one of those engines in the garage. It came from a reconditioners who sent it instead of the 2,0l we ordered and they never asked for it back..
i need to check engine numbers etc.

I sorted my garage into 4 piles of stuff.
1. Stuff I`m keeping
2. Stuff I`m not getting rid of.
3. Stuff I might use..one day.
4. Stuff that might come in handy.
