A tale of rewiring - unscramble this!

As my boy is rewired (and burnt looms peeled away from between body and panel) the following question is to be asked...

Arthur is a 1961 Maidstone so originally running a dynamo.

Recently had an alternator upgrade so nice and easy. Two wires, one in one out...

So why is there a two inch by one inch relay (six way) under the dash and heater... Was is an addition later for an alternator control box, or a generator.

Anyway. Long and short of it... The wiring is all painted blue so a pain to unscramble...

Can it just come out or will it be doing something important?

Thoughts please so that I can keep getting the help I need.

Early alternators had an external box looking a bit like a relay (my Vogue has one). If you're running a period alternator I'd leave it as-is. If you've fitted a modern one all that gubbins is contained within the alternator so the external one should be redundant.
 
Wiring for the early alternator had a black box, a silver smaller box and a warning light control relay, all close together.
 
Thank you all. Diagnosis done I think I can happily rewire without worrying about this bit of history.
