for sale here is our 1976 Dodge Commer Wander campervan project. Unfortunately she has to go as we have our first child on the way and buying a house, simply we don't have any option to keep her. Which is a great shame.
We have owned her for the last couple of years and had great fun with her. We've done alot and had alot of work to her in our time together.
We bought her from a chap who'd had her sitting static in his yard for 8 years previous. So she needed some TLC.
1724cc Hillman Hunter engine. 74,680miles.
4 speed
When purchased the engine was a little worse for wear and showed the signs of not being used in a long while. So we had a specialist pull the engine out and crack it. New pistons and rings were fitted, the head was cleaned and serviced along with the carberettor. New fuel pump, fuel lines and filters fitted. New points, coil, solenoid, HT leads and air filter. Then a much needed tune up.
She runs like a dream now. Starts first time, doesn't smoke, doesn't stall. She pulls really well for an old girl! I have really put it to the test on the hilly roads of cornwall! She copes well and has been super reliable since other than she started farting and popping on overrun. Which I cured by drilling and retapping the bolt holes in the manifold with new bolts to suit. Resealing the system. Occasionally the bendix in the starter motor doesn't engage. But does shortly after.
The clutch and gearbox are in good working order with clean and smooth changes, no crunching.
The brakes are in good working order, recently replaced the shoes on the front, cylinders and a flexipipe. Which have made a big difference. Even the MOT man was suprised at how good they were!
Poptop-Great working order and water tight. It gives so much head room. The van, as you can see by the pictures has a removable table which slots between the bench seats to form the bed. There is good storage space under the seats.
The van has a two hob cooker with grill, gas powered fridge, sink, tap, drainer and plenty of cupboard and draw space. All the wood was sanded and revarnished last week since these photos were taken. Full curtains for complete privacy. Sliding side windows in good working order.
The chassis is in great condition for it's age. There has been some welding on the underside at some point. The repairs are in good condition and sealed properly.
The body work will need some attention. We hadn't quite got to that bit yet in our project. She is a little tatty.
All four quarters at the bottom are decaying a bit and there are a few holes around the rear numberplate recess. there is some rust around the bottom of the passenger door. We sourced a replacement tin top panel for the front of the roof due to there being a big hole and patch of rust in it. Which is fitted.
She has 3 weeks MOT and six months TAX. MOT is booked for 16th March so will be sold with 12 months.
I took her for a pre MOT check last week and was told it needs the handbrake levelling up on the front wheels. The brake lights need fixing and the kingpins need greasing and that's all. She will be good for another year. I would love to see this van go onto a good home. £2950. Open to sensible offers.
