This is where my story begins, here she is as promised,My van.
As the date shows, she was a looker back then. The previous owner used to take her to rallies regularly,as you can see from the board in front of the van,and so will i when she is finished.
When i went to collect her from the previous owners wife,(he died last september)She said a friend of hers had looked the van over, and was having trouble selecting gears. On closer inspection there was a leak from the clutch master cylinder.
I got her home and got the front end up on a couple of jacks. Clamped the clutch fluid pipe, put a piece of polythene bag over the inside of the filler cap,to prevent fluid loss, and removed the pipe from the back of the master cylinder. I then removed the split pin,and the 2 bolts and pulled the whole cylinder free.
Once on the bench the problem became apparent, someone had fitted a new set of rubber seals and put the cup shaped one on the piston rod the wrong way around. Also the inside of the cylinder was badly pitted, so even with new seals, fluid could still seep past them.
CURE:-Wrapped my finger in a piece of 1200 wet & dry then rubbed the inside smooth. Afterwards i turned the seal the correct way around and put everything back together. It has worked like new ever since.
I will return to add yet more information to my story another time.
