I am the lucky new owener of this vechicle.... not sure if lucky is the word yet as i ahven't even seen it in the flesh. just an impluse buy from the dreaded ebay!!!!!!!
I've brought this as a promotional vechicle for my new restaurant in newcastle. I've restored and worked on many cars but never a commer. can someone give me any useful advice tips and guidance on my new purchase.
from what i gather it seems this van was built during a cross over period with manufactures?
any advice would be great i have done a little research and found this vehicle was at a car show in july 2012 (so fingercrossed not a complete rotter)

What have you done[:0] It's a complete basket case Seriously it doesn't look too bad at all, door bottoms look suspect and do I detect some issues around the roof gutters. I also suspect there will be something lurking under that amazing looking sun visor - the roof peak is can be a particular problem area on Commers. But fear not all those repair panels are available from suppliers on here - you should soon have a very nice platform to advertise your pizza's [^]
Any chance you can bring some samples along to one of our meets
The 'crossover' you mentioned was when Commer became Dodge, for a short while only the badge on the front changed (like yours) then the Spacevan arrived with the big plastic grin and 'revamped' interior.

OK SO AFTER COMPLETE NECESSARY WORKS ONE THE VAN I TOOK IT FOR IT'S MOT… …….. IT FAILED..!!!!!
no big surprise there but the mot station are being as helpful as a packet of dead squirrels…
anyhow it only failed on the front brakes… so i said i would adjust them and brign it back..!!! that don't but they still wouyldnt pass it.. here are the two read outs one from first test

The brakes have an imbalance on the front which is greater than allowed, but they seem to be working OK, it's common for Commer front brakes to behave like this after being laid up for a while. Take the hubs off and give everything a good clean and take the rusty edge off the inside of the drums. Adjust them up, with the wheel off, giving the drum a couple of sharp taps with a hammer to line the shoes up as you adjust. When the drum locks up give it another couple of taps and take the adjuster back a couple of clicks, another couple of taps and the drum should spin freely. Then take the van out and give the brakes a good work out, they don't like being left idle so give them something to do before you take it back for a re-test.

Ok so took it to another garage who were much more helpful…. any how the brakes upfront seems to be getting better as we drive it more but the issue no lyes with the back end…it lc's up very easily.!!!!
i feel this is because it is a pick up so theres no weight load over the rear axle.. the dude in the garage asked if the comer vans were original fired with a brake balancing thing….. a mechanical arm that sits on the axle to adjust the rear brakes as the weight over the axle increases??? any one have any idea what he's talking about???
(P.S. am i able to transfer this topic into readers rides rather than the classifies section???)

They never were fitted with brake balancers. No weight on the rear can be an issue, can you load something on the back? Even if it's a couple of handy mechanics :I

A decellerometer can be used at any time at the testers decision. On the MOT inspection sheet it says only to use roller brake tester if it is a vehicle that the tester knows wont be damaged by the rollers I.E. Limited slip diff, 4x4 or fitted with traction control.
If the rollers pack up then the decellerometer can be used for every test but only for 48 hours.
I sorted my garage into 4 piles of stuff.
1. Stuff I`m keeping
2. Stuff I`m not getting rid of.
3. Stuff I might use..one day.
4. Stuff that might come in handy.
