This is how it all began for me. The pictures are from the early 1970's. The hansome guy in the photo's is my father. He was a Post Office clerk, seconded by TV Licence Records in Bristol.
When the vans came into a particular area, they would be accompanied by a PO clerk. He would join the driver and operator.
About 5 years ago I saw my van advertised in a mag 'Does anyone want to save this?'. Because of the obvious connection, I thought 'what a good idea'. Even if this was from the second batch of vans and labled as a Spacevan, rather than the earlier Commer.
The vans were origionally converted by Vosper-Thornycroft. Subsequently taken over by Rolls-Royce Marine. I have spoken to one guy who remembers building these as an apprentice and have been given a contact name at RR to find out more.
So, who would have thought, that a humble Commer van would have direct links with the mighty Rolls-Royce!
