12v versus 240v fridges

heres my query,

most multi input fridges (gas 12v/240v) only cycle on thermostat control when on 240v, when running on 12v they just run flat out - around 6 amps

in terms of overall battery use, would your leisure battery last longer running through an inverter (with its associated efficiency loss) to power the fridge on 240v so that it is thermostatically controlled or..

run the fridge flat out on 12v

the 240v fridge I have draws 0.6amps, so I am wondering whether its worth running through an inverter or just saving it for 240v hookups

i think through an inverter it would probably draw 15 amps? purely working on 240v divided by 12v times 0.6 amps (gives 12 amps but rounded to 15 for inefficiency's)

but it would cycle rather than draw that continually

Really 12v is only for when you are on the move, the fridge will take a certain amount of power to keep it cold - 12v or 240v the battery won't last long:I

We have a gas/12v fridge, and when on campsites I had the leisure battery constantly on charge to keep the fridge cold. Now however I have bought a power source very much like a laptop power source so when the van is plugged into the mains the 12v fridge is powered, leaving the leisure battery untouched. All very good apart from the fact that the fridge freezes the milk if you don't turn it off over night. I measured the ampege draw on the fridge and got power source from maplins. So our fridge is gas, 12v, powered by a split relay or effectively mains powered.

[:0] A Watt is a Watt no mater what the voltage is so if your fridge is say 60 Watts then at 12 volts it will draw 5 Amps if you run it through an inverter it will need 5 Amps for the fridge and a bit more for the inverter, The best idea would be run it at 12 Volts but get a pulse relay timer them you can control the time the fridge is running.;)
