Drive along.. all seems ok.. then he cuts out.
It's not an immediate thing, kind of grunts along for 100 feet or so then dies.

I understand that campers were based on 1500, meaning softer suspension and I would guess more wallowy handling ?

Engine is losing water, but not quickly.
Small amount of mayo in the oil filler cap.
Removing the water filler and viewing the radiator coolant: If I blip the accelerator, it doesn't bubble or surge. Seems fine.
Water pressure seems ok.
so .. somehow water is getting in the oil...

I thought the heater was a bit crap but concluded it's a 70's van, they hadn't really got it all sorted by then and it's a large cabin to heat.

Some behaviour we've seen of late (1725 standard Commer PB engine, 1974 bus) :
Try to start on a cold morning. Engine turns over, but veeery slowly. Not enough to start.
After a quick squirt of extra leccy with some jump leads, the engine turns more freely, but is probably flooded by now so...

I need to enable it tomove further back as drjving at the moment involves a strange tap-dance on the pedals.
Has anyone done any mods for this ? (Except adding new seats.. we want to keep these ones if possible)

took our van to have new tyres fitted (195/80 15) and the fella changing them found that when loosening the wheel nuts, one of the studs rotates in the drum (rear wheel) with ghe nut. So its effectively un-removable.
I havent had a close look yet, but it seems this might be a sticky...
