you could try Vehicle Wiring Products who do a cab heater plus De-froster kit, which would replace the old unit... bit pricey at £155 + £33 (and these prices might be out of date). Failing that you could go to a scrappy and pull a box out of another (non Commer) van

maybe try another temperature sensor? these are pretty cheap and can easily go wrong, so might be letting current run thro it when it shouldn't, so giving a reading. Am i right in thinking you've got a manual? if not i can send you a spare one (dated '74) which might help.

Ha! I've met that old bloke in Redland - often see him round town in his van, had a long chat once when he pulled up next to mine to see if I was having problems (was doing the usual under bonnet inspection at the time).
