    New Starter motor

Yep I fitted a Wasp starter to the rebuilt Alpine engine I fitted to Pootle and starting is instant. Brilliant upgrade to replace old Lucas Bendix type....

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Well the first Bond-Car was a Sunbeam Alpine so at least we have real Bond Overdrives! Could use some rockets on the front though to blast some of traffic away down in SE England.... :D

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Well I have done about 10 miles around local roads and all good so far. Have checked overdrive works OK and it really does help a surprising amount in top. Next test will be a few miles down the A3 to see how she handles at speed!

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Hi Roger I don't know about the earlier adapter so can't comment really but in fact the bracketry I made was quickly hacked out of a bit of scrap one evening. It is a bit OTT and could be used as a lifting-point if Pootle rolled over but it was quick and free and works so I'm happy! Thanks to...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Eventful day today.... Became grandad for the first time.... well-done Ella and Luke (and baby Leo of course) ....and also fitted Pootle's gearbox with eldest son Ben. As usual with jobs expected to have problems, it all worked out fine in the end - key element was using a couple of 10" long...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Before fitting the gearbox I thought I should check linkage parts and found the universal joint was badly worn and the spherical bearing on the cross-shaft had crumbled to nothing so machined new shafts and bushes for UJ and new spherical bearing from PTFE.... No excuses left so fitting...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

So rogermf wanted some pictures of rear mount on the overdrive gearbox. Happily using the Commer bellhousing means the mounting points on the chassis don't change and the mounting block for the overdrive is almost inline with the ones on the original mounting plate. As original plate won't fit...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

and here is latest stupid mistake learning exercise... I needed a couple of UJs for the propshaft and bought the wrong ones on t'internet! Why didn't I contact Martin - he supplied clutch and stuff so why didn't I think of him first? Hope he can supply correct ones and I can get shaft sorted...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

or foolhardy...... A neighbor spoke to me the other day as I was working on the Commer and asked how I knew how to do 'all this engine' stuff. He wasn't sure I meant it when I said, I'm just arrogant enough to think I can do it, so I crack-on and give it a go and when it goes wrong I do it again...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Hi folks. In the end I stripped down both boxes and rebuilt Pootles box with the overdrive mainshaft from the 'alpine' box. As suggested above, the 'Alpine' box wasn't actually from an Alpine but has ratios from a 'standard' car (according to the Rootes manual). All in all not a bad project and...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Just searched forum and see Jimberlake fitted a Hawk 4.22 differential. Any other diff swaps been tried?

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

No problem Panky Given current situation I'm going to refit the input shafts temporarily and then check gear ratios on both boxes I have. Then I'll jack up a wheel on Pootle to see what diff is fitted (5.125 or 5.625). I'll then at least understand what options I have. Looking at the numbers...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Hi Panky Sorry if I'm being dim but I'm not sure which alpine gear wheel you mean. I have the alpine input shaft stripped as below and I don't think this gear can come off the shaft?... The gear on here must match the alpine cluster of gears on the layshaft I think and they are all machined...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Hello all Thanks for input on the gearbox saga. No resolution yet but some progress.... At the moment I have a bit of an Eric Morcombe gearbox - all the right gears, but not necessarily in the right order.... So I removed the input shafts from both gearboxes which was not as bad a task as I'd...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Hi Thanks for input on this. Once I cleaned up the gear selector box from Pootle the tapped holes for reversing switch and overdrive switch were obvious and I have some new switches in the post as old Alpine ones not really worth the risk. The selector mechanism is surprisingly good after 50...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Hi Panky Hmm needs some consideration methinks. I can do either I guess but changing the gear change rods seems less daunting than stripping gearbox to swap gears. Stripping the box also means removing the overdrive and getting that back on with springs etc is sometimes a challenge I think? I...

    Overdrive gearbox for Pootle?

Hi all So a bit of progress on Pootle - delayed a while whilst I rebuilt the engine on my 2004 Celica engine which started burning oil like a 2 stroke (30:1 petroil!). Right, so Pootles gearbox out this morning and alpine box is ready to go in - box all nice and smooth and overdrive working...

    Pootle getting hot and bothered

Hmm some real radiators there. Not sure SWMBO would fancy those - having realized that making rad 3" deeper blocks the access for a starting handle has caused problems with management I fear. Unfortunately overheating looks pretty dire to me at the moment so clearing crud from galleries and as...
