So been umming and arring over these twin strombergs. I really don't know my way round them, to adjust mixture you have to use a special tool - apparently. I'm very tempted to ditch them and go with a single SU. Having 2x carbs is just more to potentially go wrong too. I'm struggling to get her...

hello, may well be. I was just concerned what with all the pitting they kept the water in the water ways rather than spilling between the gasket!

haha yes I would be worried then! Fingers crossed it's not too bad after the skim. To be honest Panky it's on my older manual for the 1600 engine. The correct manual for the 1725 doesn't show the same illustration - just wondering if they are there or not...

Not sure yet, might get it back today. On another note I was studying the workshop manual and noticed on an exploded view of the engine 3 sleeves sitting between the head and the block I'm guessing on water ways? These weren't present on mine on strip down. Should they be?

the outlines of the gasket are from the iron head one I incorrectly fitted - which did have different shaped apertures, smaller in places... the guy skimming the head thinks that a few of the deep pits sit outside the chamber with the 'correct' alloy hunter gasket I've got now.

Well it's a alloy head off my highwayman. Which has the twin stromberg'd engine. It came as is. Running. However not very well. The old gasket was so mangled after removal i'm struggling to compare it you see. After fitting a gasket for a cast iron head I had sitting about - that didn't hold...

so will the hunter one i got here be ok :confused:

Have I missed something... did none of the commer PBs come with the alloy head engines as standard? If not what were they from? I'm having problems getting the correct gasket for the highwayman. It's got twin strombergs... Tom

thanks panky, yes I think it's the upper and lower ones as the king pins 'only' got an advisory.

it certainly lives up to it's name - although it's not acrid like you might imagine. It's quite smooth against the cream. So I limped her home from the MOT with a bit of an essay in hand :( Nothing too major in all honesty and I knew a lot of it needed doing. One thing that came up is play...

p.s. does anyone know the valve clearances for the alloy head engine? same as cast iron??

Hope you got yours sorted Panky, not a great time of year for it to go :( I did mine Saturday, i fear it was a waste of time as the head had some nasty pitting around one piston. But I didn't have time to send it off for a skim but hoping it holds for a couple of weeks until I can strip it back...

that is tidy

It is an amazing design - the extension on the back of the highwayman. Where it overshoots the back of the chassis/pan. I can only assume they never intended the vans to last all that long as water ingress and trapping has such potential. And once those timbers get a water source they just suck...
