    Commer PB Builder’s Pick Up

Nice to hear of someone else's adventures with a Perkins. The rope seals will weep forever without getting a lot worse.

    2700HP

We put the main and intermediate shafts back in today........ That's the turbines in the background, the forward/reverse gears in the foreground, with the final drive up underneath. Lovely stuff :)

    Electric Fuel Pump

If you need more convincing, here's a wiring diagram for an electric fuel pump which avoids the danger of pumping on with a stalled engine........ .........and here's one for a mechanical fuel pump........ It's much simpler.:)

    Electric Fuel Pump

Depends where the leak is. Last week I left the petrol van idling nicely to warm up in the barn and went to find something. When I came back the van had stalled, choked itself to a standstill because there was a problem with the carburetor float valve. The carb was full of liquid fuel. If it...

    Electric Fuel Pump

There is another problem with electric fuel pumps. If the pressure pipe from the pump blows off, or is badly damaged, the pump will keep pumping fuel over a potentially hot engine with live electrics. had exactly this happen to my old Ford Anglia many years ago. The engine bay was full of spilt...

    Head gasket types

Type of sealant isn't a problem. Hylomar Aerograde. The question is whether to use it at all. The steel gaskets are only used on cast iron heads. I think they are the correct ones (as in similar to OEM ones). Being thinner they raise the compression ratio just a bit.

    Head gasket types

I'm after a bit of advice...... As you know, I don't generally do petrol at all, (apart from garden machinery :)) but I fitted a new head gasket to the Cub's 1725 iron head engine and it has the very slightest coolant leak from the front of the head, presumably due to less than perfect surface...

Diesel to petrol conversion - how much work

I'd ask the same question. A well sorted 4108 will give loads of smiles per mile, and about 35MPG. Mine's a diesel, and I'd never swap. I have both types in my barn at present, so I'm able to compare........... As to the differences I can think of, in no particular order. Alternator on...

There's always more work than you think, but take it one step at a time. You'll get there.

    Radiators

Cut the old belt, then wrap it round the new path, overlapping the ends. Draw a line across both belts, then open it out and measure the distance between the two marks. That is the length of the belt you require. Oh, and by the way, I think you may be reversing the flow to the cab heater by...

    Speedo reading

Ah Jim, that reminds me. When I regeared my truck 25 years ago with different axle and larger wheels the speedo was obviously way out, so I calculated, then drew a new circular scale on paper, and stuck it on the front of the glass. It's still there.

    Speedo reading

The speedo reading depends on the speedo gear fitted in the tail housing of the gearbox. I think there are gears with different numbers of teeth, but have no idea which are right for our van's differential, wheel and tyre size combination. The workshop manual doesn't help either. I have a spare...

    Stiff Handbrake Cable

The Cub's handbrake cable was very stiff but otherwise OK, and wouldn't return under the spring tension. All that hardened grease over 50 years had taken its toll. Due to the lack of availability, I thought I'd try to sort it. I took it off (obviously) and put it in the bottom oven of the AGA...

    Merry Christmas

Thank you Neil. I'd also like to send my best wishes to all Commerades, whether they celebrate Christmas or not. For a change, I'll be working on The Cub's van. Overdrive bearings shot, inhibitor switch missing, propshaft UJs stiff, new diff seal, bad synchro on 3rd/4th, New clutch, clutch...
