Broke down whole distributor is loose , were it bolts on , any suggestions she slowed down in first and second gear so I pulled into a housing estate the van will still drive ,and start maybe that's a bad sign

It just means the timing isn't too far out. Is it the pinch bolt at the base of the dizzy or the two bolts that screw into the block.

the 2 into block ,
I barely turned one and its tight again , not even half a turn, will have to take of glass filter piece so I can get a better turn , I have every socket head except the one I need , so just using an open ended spanner

Thanks panky I really thought the engine was done , I need to give it a good inspection all over , its home now all covered , one great thing is peoples generosity , the house i parked in from of the made me some hot tea and biscuits and offered me a lift if needed really appreciate the help

Ahh brilliant that was thoughtful. Restoring faith in humanity :)
Theres still some lovely people out there., These old vintage Van's work wonders , everytime I drive it you can see peoples faces light up plus it takes me an hour longer than normal to go the shops if I bring the van as I end up waffling with lots of people who's father or grandfather had a commer , I dont know were they have all gone in Ireland as i have never seen another commer on the road here , I only know of one that I have never seen in person, it's actually up for sale at the moment 6000 euros . I think it's on this site , it's in the Dublin Gaa colours navy blue and a lighter blue ,

Tell me about it lol. Everybody over a certain age has been in one but I have never seen another. My neighbour’s have seen 3 (including Beaulieu lol).
Bit like a leprechaun really. Never really see them but when you do they cause nothing but trouble but great fun in the process lol.

Iephrechaun I, know plenty of them even have one or two in my family , you normally see them at weddings and funerals ,always last to leave the venue , who or what is beaulieu I,m lost , I covered my van last night and not a drop of condensation , now I dont know if it's all the cardboard boxes or the cover itself ,I,d say the covers have helped , I have also moved it to a different spot in the carpark were I live , i moved it to were it is now because my nieghbour has a car that's effed parked there for months and for some strange reason it never has ice or condensation on it , at the back of it there is a small building that contains some kind of pump I think it for the water , maybe its producing heat in the building and heat is coming out thru the wall
,anyhow I am parked right up next to it . Right I am off to read the commer manual to see if the distributor mount has a gasket under neat it were it attaches to the engine block, I dont think there is one on it on my van .

There's a very early Commer Auto-Sleeper in the national motor museum at Beaulieu. Great pace to visit.

Cheers panky I hadn't a clue what soupdragon meant , until your comment I was thinking maybe he is on about his van because its blue and beaulieu is what he calls it , is beaulieu in france ?

No it's in deepest darkest Hampshire. We went there years ago on a run out from an early Commer meet in the New Forest. It was that long ago I didn't have my van on the road and went in my Mini and a tent

Cool , I just checked it out looks like a great place to visit, couldn't see the commer thou ,

I’ve not been there for years either. Was really young and only remember the orange orange car lol. Yes it should have a gasket. I bought a gasket sheet and made a copy when I ruined the original gasket.

as for were the the distributor mounts to the engine block I cant see a gasket , tryed to get at it yesterday but none of my sockets or spanners are the proper size , I even grinded an old spanner to try and fit , it's in a very tight spot so it's hard to get at , I keep saying it so I will have to invest in some metric size old tools for the job .
Off subject but I love these old screws ,lovely design , , off an old Phillip's radio , other brass bit are for shelves , got them outta an old wooden unit , these bits will be going somewhere it the van, The handles that u use to raise the roof are really ugly and look like they were taken off a cupboard door so I may use the ones in my pictures, not sure about the brass but I can always paint them ,
