As I suspected. The idler gears are siezed solid, lots of glitter in the oil but the bearings look like new so I've flushed the pinion bearings out. Time to get ordering stuff...

Successful evening. The axle tube is back in the van, the old diff is stripped for what I need to swop over for the new one. The adaptor plate and shims have been test fitted..
The old diff has gone into the "Munro" box (offerings to the god of speed)... it's pretty full now......
 
I know! I've now got to plumb it in. It's going in the rear line (easier) so it will hold the rear brakes off rather than hold front on. Makes for a more interesting burn out at the strip. Still got to move the bias valve though.
 
It's in. I'm now facing the dreaded task of bleeding the brakes. Last time it took 3L of fluid and a master cylinder rebuild!
