What driving it home 5he other day and after about 30miles on a scotcher of a day it starting backfiring when stopping down the years, SO i stopped for about half an hour and checked all i could it started up no backfire and drives me home an9ther
6miles. Anyway i droves it around all day and no backfire till about an hour ago just once , so i went home and che ked everything and it now drives like its reving to high , flying al9ng . Checked the timing doesnt seem to have moved , before i drove it the 30 miles the other day it would start on the button but was a sluggish tick over , now after it did the one backfire today and i checked it over it drives like a racing car . When reversing out of my parking space i could do it without touching the acellerater
I took it for a drive and its in my OPINION over accelerating . T IT could of being running SHIT all along and now its cleared its self and the tick over could be as it should be any thoughts , i checked for stickng câbles

The only videos I’ve seen on here are you tube ones. I can’t really help sorry. Apart from checking the throttle and choke cables and carb I don’t know.

THANKS soupdragon , i am just going to reset the timing and its due new sprk plugs , i think the backfiring is from fuel starvation from the heat and i Will go over the ecéllérater cables to check if i snagged one on something whilst try in to sort the backfiring issue, thank for ur help

Possibly an air leak on the inlet manifold causing a weak mixture. First check the vacuum pipe from the manifold to the distributer and if that is OK try spraying WD40 around the joints and see if the engine note changes. The timing shouldn't move if everything is tight so don't adjust that just yet.

WELL, i got the van running the way it was , i had snagged the accelerater câble under the oil bath breather so was stuck mak8ng the van run over accelerate. Checked the inlet manifold for leaks seems ok. the rounded thing on thé distributeur can be moved about 5ml EITHER way , can it be tightened also i am going To tighten the copper skinny pipe from carburateur to distributeur , cab stinks of petrol so i dont know how but i Feel van is getting to much petrol but the van flys along so a bit confused

If all is original there's a manifold drain positioned on the inlet manifold under the carb. When the engine is switched off you can get a few drops of petrol dribbling out of the drain and onto the exhaust hence the petrol smell. It's a curved small bore pipe with a pinhole end to it, if it's still fitted then I would remove it and plug the hole.

Yes it has that drain pipe thingy i Will do as u suggested , plug it , still a bit confuses with the backfire issue , hopefully when i tighten the little copper tube from carburateur to distributeur it Will solve it , i as yesterday when checking the 1yr old coil lead discovered it had a bit broken or heat fractured on the threaded end so i stuck on the old original one , the new leads ect are very bad quality , i am going to try get an old original distributeur cap and stick all the original leads . THANKS again for the help
