New van - need a bit of advice

Hi all, I finally got my hands on a pop top Autosleeper. Drove to pick it up on Friday then went straight to the campsite and spent two nights in it. On my way home now.

Two urgent things I need help with.

1. The glass in the roof light is gone so it lets rain in. We’ve put a disposable turkey roasting tin over it but we need to fix that ASAP. Does anybody know where I’d get some more glass/plastic? I think it would need to be about 23x23cm and only a few cm deep. Think it may be polycarbonate.

2. Can anybody recommend a garage near Aylesbury? The front door handles/locks are in a bad way and I need to make them useable - we’re climbing in through the back right now. I’m going to replace the door skins eventually but that will take time.

Thanks I’m advance.

Excellent on the find. Pity about the problems. Don’t know what the skylight looks like but could you get a sheet of polycarbonate from a hardware store and glue it onto the top as a temporary fix. If nobody on here knows where to get new one you may have to look on caravan parts shops and hopefully one will be the right size or a little bigger?

Auto-Sleepers pop-tops don't usually have a rooflight so it's either special order or a previous owner has done the job. As SOups said you best bet is somewhere like B&Q or Wickes for the clear sheet, cut it oversized and use screws and washers to secure it with a bead of sealant to keep the rain out. Is it a flat sheet of Perspex or is it the shaped/opening type?
You know the rules - we need pics

If that’s the case then hopefully there is a make and code on it and fingers crossed it’s still made and you can do a straight swap etc.

Nice one  The body looks really solid and the interior is wonderful. Obviously altered to the previous owners needs but done really well. I luvvit:)

And here's one of the roof. It looks factory to me unless somebody got handy with the fibreglass. It's had a low quality repaint at some point in it's history.

You can see the mechanism is still there but the glass/plastic is gone.

I assume there is framework for the glass to sit in or on? Is it screwed in or bonded?

Please see my high quality diagram below. The grey is the fibreglass. The red is the glass/plastic. The blue is the mounting brackets.

The glass/plastic curves over the lips in the fibreglass so it is waterproof without having to form a watertight seal. It's pretty similar to how the Autosleeper pop-up roof fits. There's no frame though.

This item has a similar arrangement. The white plastic kerb at the bottom is moulded from fibreglass on my van together with the roof and it's the clear plastic item that needs replacing.

Ahh so ideally you need to find a very similar one or you will have to chop it all out? Did you manage to find any markings to determine make/model?

It would be easy enough to remove the cover of a replacement unit and seal it onto your van. There's loads on ebay, and not too expensive, if you enter the size you need.

This might be of use to BC Sunshine too.

A very clumsy measurement suggested the dome would need to be about 23x23cm. This seems considerably smaller than any we've managed to find on eBay or anywhere else. Apart from one which is designed for a 17x17cm aperture. We've emailed the seller to how big the dome itself is but I suspect that one will be too small. If we go too big then I don't think I'll be able to get the mechanism to fit back on properly.

I'm basically looking at plastic tubs on Google Images right now.

Would searching for a vent to fit your opening size be easier and then you could find out what the dome size would be and if it would be suitable?

Perhaps. I've not got access to the van right now, it's at my mother-in-laws, but I'll need to take better measurements. Will be going back next weekend for a closer look.

In case anybody cares, I managed to reconstruct the parts of the dome that were saved. It seems to be larger than I expected. These remains are 26cm long and there's more to go.

So from what I've read the 28x28 is designed for a 28cm hole but the dome itself is 32cm. I'll keep looking.
