Chassis numbers - Is yours tax exempt ??

Just thought that some of you might like this info..
I have been in touch with a very helpful bloke at Renault trucks
who has given me some info on the last Commer PB to come
off the line in 1972.
So for a vehicle to be tax exempt it must have been BUILT before
midnight on 31st Dec 1972.. (you probably all know this already?)

To prove this you need a copy of the Line Book..

The date of registration not important !!
Remember that most campers sat around at convertors for many many months before being converted and registered..
The last PB off the production line in Jan 1973 had the chassis number-158645. ( the magic number.. [8D])
So if your chassis number is prior to this one it is tax exempt..
if its after, dont waste any money getting an expert to date it for you!!

Although be aware that a special batch order went through with the last chassis number in Jan 73 being 151976 ?

So check your numbers, even if it was registered in 74 you may still have a chance of tax exemption, and find yourself 180 quid better off every year..
Good Luck all
Will ;)

I think that there is a previous posting somewhere
on here giving the details of someone who will give you a proper?
certificate verifing the date of MFG, I think he charges about 30 quid.
Sorry Debs, dont know what heading that post was under?
vehicle VED springs to mind?
I think that this route is the best option, now that we know the numbers that will be exempt, because you may have difficulty with the dvla without it, also I think its only fair on my contact at Renault. I dont want to pester him as he has gone to the trouble to give me this info. Also £30 will be a small price to pay for the correct docs, and the future saving..:):)
Cheers..

you could write to renault as I previously stated,I have a letter from them dating no.1 so just have to go to dvla when I am ready to Tax they will do it at the office,it's so simple it confuses people [)]

Hi Chris.. Good news on yours[8D]..
We have done the same before for Hut. Sometimes though the DVLA might
ask to inspect the vehicle..
Not usualy a problem ??
Although bear in mind that some folks might not be as used to this kind of thing as we might be..;)

really weird 'cos the previous owner of no.1 has all these letters where he was trying to get the status sorted didn't need most of it,he must of got the wrong answers at the other end of the phone or asked unnecessary questions.Depends who you speak to too,a lot of the time :)

Just to let you know the "s" plate was issued after no.1 was bought back to the uk after 10 years in s africa.

Will do you know what the special batch were ? 151976 were they something special?Ie bt vans or any thing interesting?
still not a 100% sure of the above dates I always look for pre 73 before January? not sure of the actual day 1st-31st?now who's confused [)]& never presume a '73 is tax exempt :)

I was only asking cos if someone on the forum could get hold of this line book then we could help eachother out without having to pay the guy £30.00 Thats what I had to do to get Skye dated. She is now tax exempt thanks to him but he must have this line book.;)

His name is Mike Worthington-Williams by the way:)

The cut off date is 31st Dec 1972, Chris.. (not Jan as I first posted..):I
So to clarify, for it to be tax exempt the van must heve to have come
off the production line before midnight on the above date..
i.e.-Pre 1973!
Happy new year !!

Sorry Chris, but no specific info on the special batch, but i think
that it must have been for export? or BT etc.. Poss a company order?

The line book is held by Renault trucks ( Dunstable ) I think that a full copy would be out of the question.. Can you imagine how large it would be ?? You could ask them for one Debs, but I think that they may charge for the ink and paper !! :):)

We must remember that if they get bombarded with requests, that they may in future be reluctant to help? Remember that they have searched their records free of charge up to yet.. So the above chassis number info will prevent wasting your time , and theirs..;)
I wonder how we would get on if it was one of the big players, Ford etc, they may not have been this helpful?
So all I can suggest is that if you think that its a genuine pre 73 number, contact them direct. or use the guy Debs used, I guess he may have to pay to access their records?

I do not have any Postal address. but they can be found
via a web search !!
For now folks, thats all I know..;)

Been thinking.. (Painful!!)
I wonder if your idea of a copy of the line book might just be possible Debs? ;)
If we were to offer to pay for the cost of reproduction, I wonder if they would make it avalible to a club? or an appointed archivist?
Its probably unlikely due to the fraud aspect?
I may email the guy next week. But dont hold your breath!!:D
Cheers all..

If the details are held by Renault, it may be possible. The Swedish Renault 15-17 club has managed to acquire the fabrication numbers and dates for Renault 17's and published it on their website. I discovered that although one of my cars wasn't registered until July 1973, it was manufactured in October 1972 :D
Unfortunately I can't access their site at the moment as some advertising company has hijacked their URL :(

Thats a shame Jon.. I checked one last week,
It was reg in 74, but made in Jan 73.. What a bummer....
Trust all is well with u ? Dave and myself must pop round and
see this pick up sometime..
Cheers.. Will..
